We had a beautiful Halloween day!! Our weather couldn't have been better, and we enjoyed a 2020-style Halloween class party. The class played Bingo, complete with pumpkin spice scented pumpkin markers! We watched an Arthur Halloween special about "scaring" away hiccups. We enjoyed treats provided by our fantastic parents. I thought I would share a few pictures from our memorable day. Enjoy!

STREAM Snake
Can you create a long green snake from 32 cups? Use only three base "legs" and see how long your snake can grow. The cups cannot touch the ground!
Students worked in teams to create this project. They learned some snake facts, and enjoyed experimenting with cup engineering. Four snakes were created!
Spider Web Construction
We love art!! Art happens for our class each Wednesday. This week the class created spiders and webs with paper, crayons and glue. Check out these photos of work in progress.
Mr. Auman began by having students create a dot on their gray piece of paper. They then created webs by drawing a series of lines with crayons. Spiders were created from paper. Students folded the legs of their spiders to create a three-dimensional effect. We think our project turned out rather spook-tacular!

Base Ten Blocks
Our math chapter is on place value. In second grade we explore 100's, 10's, and 1's. This week we began discussing place value, and exploring how to make numbers with base ten blocks. Did you know that 21 can be created with 2 tens and 1 one, and with 21 ones? Students enjoyed creating number amounts with different base ten blocks.
Counting by 10's is helpful. We practiced counting by 10's as we explored estimation and rounding concepts. Hooray for place value -- and Base Ten blocks. :)
Leaf Drawing
We have noticed so many leaves falling! We created a Haiku poem to describe the leaves we see and feel in the fall. Our poems will be attached to our leaf art creations. Students created a crayon collage drawing using different colors to draw different shapes of leaves.
In these pictures, students are drawing their crayon leaves. After the drawings have been created, we will paint them with water color paints. Our Haiku poems will be displayed with our art. We are excited to share these with parents when you visit for conferences!
Pumpkin Roll
We explored gravity, force, and velocity during STREAM this week. Students tested different pumpkins on a ramp to determine which pumpkin could roll the farthest. It was neat to see the teams experiment with the different shaped pumpkins and adjust the ramp to get their pumpkin to roll farther.
Students discovered that pumpkins can roll farther when they are given a push, and the surface is on an incline. One group also discovered, when their stem fell off, that this changed how the pumpkin rolled. We also learned that dropping the pumpkin can cause it to break. A broken pumpkin does not roll well!
"Donut" Forget to Say Happy Birthday
October has been a lucky birthday month for our class! We celebrated our final birthday for this month yesterday. The treat today was "Pokey" ball donuts. They were a hit! Note - I am not sure if I actually spelled "pokey" correctly. If I did spell it incorrectly, I apologize. Obviously, I need to do a bit of research on this topic. Happy birthday!!

Pumpkin Party
Pumpkins have seeds, a hard outer shell, "guts," and can be more colors than just orange. We explored facts about pumpkins in our Scholastic News, so we decided to create pumpkin art with our facts. Students selected a fact to add to their pumpkin.
Each student colored their pumpkins and added crepe paper squares to create a 3-dimensional pumpkin fact. We used our pencils to wrap the crepe paper squares and dip into liquid glue. Students then attached them to their pumpkins. We look forward to sharing these with you when we have conferences next week!

Birthday Blessings
We began our week celebrating another birthday! Everyone was quite excited for this special day. We were able to hear about a new gift during show and tell, and we learned more about our birthday student's favorite things.
The weather was amazing! Cupcakes and milk were enjoyed by all to celebrate this special day.

US Symbols & Landmarks
We are exploring US symbols and landmarks in Social Studies. We are learning why we have rules, what freedom means, how peace is a principle we all practice, and key dates of our nation's history. Get excited! Right?! I know, most of you are probably saying: "Yawn. That sounds rather ordinary."
This IS the perfect time to talk about our history. Our nation is making history in so many ways. I love bringing history to life for kids. We are creating models of historic landmarks and symbols. We will paint our models and photograph them for our trading cards. The students are truly passionate about the stories attached to each item. These photos showcase our beginning projects. Enjoy!
Birthday Fun
The month of October is a birthday gold mine for our class! We celebrated our first birthday of the month with blue donuts. Each donut was decked out with gold sprinkles. It was a fun day for all!

All School Rosary
Today marks the day of victory in the Battle of Lepanto. The Pope asked all to pray the Rosary on this battle day for victory. The Christian crusaders won this battle on October 7, 1571. Pope Pius V set aside this day, October 7, as the feast of the Most Holy Rosary, and as a day to honor the Mother of God as "Saint Mary of Victory."
We prayed an all school Rosary today, to ask for Mary's intercession on behalf of the Coronavirus, our military family members, healthcare professionals, service professionals, teachers, students, and those experiencing illness. We pray for our families and all who are fighting "battles" at this time. Mary Mother of Peace, pray for us.

Nature Weaving
What amazing weather we have been enjoying! Today we were outside for our STREAM time. We enjoyed a walk in the butterfly garden. Students collected flowers and other found nature items to include in their stick weaving project.
Three sticks were tied together to form a triangle shape. Students received a piece of yarn to wrap around their triangle. Students added their flowers, leaves, acorns, and other nature items to their weaving creation. We enjoyed creating art with fall nature finds!
