Picture Day!

Our day was filled with excitement, as today was picture day!  We have a classy class!  I couldn't resist snapping a photo of this great looking group.  The weather was warm and windy, and it was hard to believe that the last day of September was today.  Let the learning adventures continue!

Insect Construction

What can you find in the sky? We are exploring this question in second grade.  We can see many things in the sky: airplanes, birds, clouds, tree tops, sun, stars, and insects!  During our STREAM time, students created insects from Model Magic, straws, pipe cleaners, and google eyes.

Insects are active this time of year, because the growing season is ending.  We observed that insects have six legs, and three body parts.  Students tried to construct these aspects when they created their insects.  Our insects looked much more cuddly than the ones we discovered in the garden. :)

Spelling Painting

Everyone learns differently.  I love incorporating different techniques into our spelling lessons!  We used cotton swabs to "paint" our spelling words.  This activity allowed students to practice "writing" their spelling words, s-l-o-w-l-y.  As they shaped the letters, they said them out loud.

We used blue Tempra paint and lined paper for this project.  I offer "process" activities and "product" activities.  This activity is a process activity.  I am not assessing the final product, but observing the process of how students are sounding out and writing the words.  The students enjoyed painting to spell!

Hammocking

How can you create a hammock from leaves, grass, twigs, and other found nature items?  What will you need to keep your dinosaur relaxing safely off the ground?  How can you adjust your design to hold more than one dinosaur?

We explored these questions and more during our STREAM experience today!  The students discovered that Oak leaves and twigs work quite well for hammock construction.  Students also tested their designs for durability by adding rocks with their dinosaurs.  We learned that nature items can be used to create unexpected things!

Go to the Garden

The growing season is coming to an end.  We have been discussing how the days are cooler in the mornings and there is less sun.  Plus, today is the first day of fall!  It is so exciting to see how our outdoor world changes with the seasons!  We decided a garden visit was a must.

Our school garden has many tomatoes and some peppers.  The students discovered jalapeƱos and banana peppers, in addition to the tomatoes.  We will continue to visit our garden at least once per week.  We were a veggie gathering team!

Birthday Show and Tell

Birthdays are fun!  Kids look forward to them, and count the days until they arrive.  Oh to be 7 and 8 again!  :)  We celebrated our first class birthday today, and everyone was excited!  Donuts were the delivered treat, and each child definitely was thrilled this was the sweet!

We celebrated with the class singing "Happy Birthday" to our special student.  A Spanish serenade was also shared by one of our classmates.  Our birthday kiddo showed a purple geode as her show and tell.  The class asked her many questions: Why is it purple?  How did it get to be purple?  Where did you find this?  What can it do?  We had some wonderful conversations about this treasure!

Tuesday, September 15, 2020

We had our first STREAM activity today!  To say that we were excited was really an understatement. :)  Our class read a story about a young girl who cared for an orphaned rhino in Kenya.  We discussed the different needs of the rhino, and how this young girl was able to care for the rhino's needs.  We also learned about the habitat of the rhino.

For STREAM today, we collected things from our school habitat.  Students discovered acorns, leaves, sticks, rocks, grass and other plant material.  They were invited to create "found art" from the nature items.  This means that the art was arranged and left in an area for others to find.  Students were able to partner up or work individually to achieve their found art display.

Food for Free Dress Day

Wow!  Our class contributed some fantastic donations to the food pantry!  Check out our grocery fare above.  I couldn't resist snapping a photo of our amazing class with our food contributions.  We collected a total of 44 items, which is an average of 3 items per student!!  The winning class was Ms. Jueneman/Mrs. Rebel's 4th grade class with a total of 107 items.  Our school delivered almost a ton of food to the food pantry!

We talked about how food is an item that we need to survive.  "Needs" is also one of our vocabulary words for this week, and today's service project was a perfect example of "needs."

Weather What Nots

Why do we have seasons?  How hot is the sun?  How is rain made?  Why are temperatures hot in the summer and cold in the winter?  How is snow made?  These and many other questions were asked of K-State Climatologist Mary Knapp.  We enjoyed a wonderful conversation with her on Friday!

Weather is what happens day to day with temperatures and precipitation.  Climate is what occurs over a period of time.  Data collected from daily weather tells us about how our climate is changing.  We learned that we set a record low on Wednesday.  It has never been as cold as 53 degrees on September 9!  Students enjoyed tracking our temperatures this past week.  We subtracted to discover the difference in temperatures from day to day.

Under the Umbrella

I was raised on a farm, and we were outside every day, because our animals depended on us.  As a kid, outside was where we spent most of our time.  I love giving kids the opportunity to be outdoors in every season!

We have experienced a couple of rainy days.  One of the students brought an umbrella, and I couldn't resist taking this photo.  The playground takes on a different perspective in the rain.  We noticed that the colors are brighter, and the rocks are shiny.  We hope you were also able to take some time to notice how your outdoor world looks different in the rain.

Spelling Painting

We learned about closed syllable "Fred" words today!  Closed syllable words have short vowels that are sandwiched by consonants.  We learned that some of our words have a pattern of two consonants, a vowel, and two consonants.  They all make the short vowel sound.

To practice spelling our words today, we used washable Tempera paint, paintbrushes, and writing paper to practice each word.  Students said the word as they painted the letters.  This is a super way to reinforce the short vowel sound, and helps students visualize the sound with the letter.  Some students said it was more difficult to paint their words, than it was to write their words, but all expanded their fine motor skills with this activity!

My Favorite Things

I love helping kids find their writing voice!  Everyone is a writer, and some just need a little more time and the perfect topic, to let their writing shine.  We headed outside on Friday to enjoy the beautiful weather, and we wrote about our favorite things.

Earlier in the week we read about a character, Bella, who worries about almost everything.  She shared that drawing pictures and writing about her favorite things helps her feel better.  Students were invited to write about things that make them happy, or their very favorite things.  Students shared about their pets, favorite foods, sports, activities, places to visit, and people in their lives.  Cheers to our favorite things!

Undercurve

Cursive handwriting is in progress!  We are enthusiastic to learn cursive!  We began with a slant and added an undercurve.  We will move onto the overcurve next!  These are the beginning steps to forming letters in cursive.

Slanting our paper is the most important first step.  Slant is necessary for cursive to look beautiful.  We learned that the paper can do the work to help us achieve a wonderful slant.  We have three left-handed writers creating beautiful cursive work.  Watch out world -- we will begin letters soon!!
